Mellish had their 3 rd home league game this week against Kesteven after having the 1 st league win the previous week. A strong side was selected with a view to getting a second win and with strong support from our home crowd, things looked promising.

Mellish had a late withdrawal when one of the experienced players, Paul Linney, had to drop out of the 1 st XV due to a reoccurring knee injury. This had kept him away from previous league games, fortunately Paul Revill stepped into the side. Once again, Mellish forwards started the game well, taking the earlier exchanges to Kesteven.

The backs were given a good platform with Myers, Walden & Revill making some strong runs into the visiting sides 22, only for them to defend the sustained attacks. All of the play was in the Kesteven half for most of the first period with the Mellish backrow making good yardage upfront. Ryan Lewis broke from the back of a scrum & off-loaded to the supporting Wayne Gray who made a good run only to be tackled on the 10 yard line which resulted in the Kesteven skipper being yellowed carded for stamping on the tackled player. Mason kicked the resulting 40 yard penalty to give Mellish a well earned half-time lead, 3 – 0.

The second half started as strong & committed as in the first half with Mellish wasting numerous chances to score but luckily were never in any danger. The Mellish backrow upped their game & run riot of the back of the scrum. The backs were released and good work between Sean McConnell & Aaron Myers resulted in Kris Walden making a good 30 yard break with one defender left, Kris popped the ball to the usually safe hands of Matt Willaims who somehow dropped the perfect pass with try-line in his sight. The resulting scrum 10 yards out was won against the head, Ryan Lewis fed the ball to Jonny Cocking who fed the backs the ball which was passed all along the line to winger James Wheldon who outstripped the Kesteven defence to score in the corner. The final result 8 – 0 to Mellish giving the home side back to back league wins for the first time in nearly 3 years.

Although this was a win for Mellish, the final score didn't fairly reflect the game as we should of scored more points with all the possession we had in both halves. However praise has to be given to the players for gaining back to back victories over the last two weeks, however we must not rest on our laurels and continue with the same pace and determination for this Saturdays home game against North Derbyshire . The stand out players this week were Sean McConnell who ran the show from Fly-half, Aaron Myers for his bullocking runs from midfield & Ryan Lewis was the stand-out guy once again for his all action display from Number 8. And finally not forgetting Matt Williams who dominated the lineouts.
