Mellish 1st XV first league game found themselves up against against a determined Grimsby side at the Memorial ground. Mellish started the game brightly with high kick-off the Mellish forwards made series of drives up field only for Grimsby to bring a driving maul down & the ref award a penalty 35 yards out just to the left of the posts. Dave Mason missed the resulting kick.

After Grimsby 's early scare, the away side picked up a gear and started to attack Mellish through their determined forwards and backs. The travelling fly-half made a series of probing kicks into the Mellish 22 which were astutely defended by the Mellish backs. 20 mins into the game a lineout was awarded on the Mellish 22 which Grimsby won & decided to attack the Mellish line, the Mellish forwards defended the driving maul but the Grimsby pack allowed their scrum-half to pass the ball out wide which resulted in the winger scoring in the corner, the conversation was missed, 5 – 0 the half-time score.


The second half got underway with Mellish pinning the travelling side deep into their half for much of the first 10 mins. A penalty was awarded inside the Grimsby 22, Dave Mason the Mellish skipper elected for a scrum which was won. Ryan Lewis the No8 picked up & drove for the line with his back-row partners of Matt Williams & Woody in close support. The driving maul was driven over the Grimsby line where Sam Harris making his first start in more then 2 years due to a serious knee injury crashing over for the try, Dave Mason missed the conversation with the score locked at 5 – 5.

For much of the remaining minutes of the game both sides tried to attack each other in an attempt to win the game. Both sides missed kick's at goal, only for Grimsby to kick a penalty late on to take an 8 – 5 lead. Mellish tried to take the game to Grimsby in order to score points to gain a win but to no prevail. The final score Mellish 5 – Grimsby 8.

Skipper Dave Mason was disappointed not to take anything from the game but was pleased with the commitment & effort put in by the boy's.
