Nottingham Casuals RFC 7 v 72 Mellish RF
C

The game started in good spirit with the Casuals pack causing a few problems upfront to the Mellish pack which is usually quite dominant. After a succession of quick rucks & ball-carries from the Mellish pack, the ball was spun out to the backs where Paul Linney made a 50 yard run resulting in him throwing a superb pass out to Alex Bratley on the wing who sprinted into the corner to score a well worked try.

The first 20 minute session was finished in style, the Mellish centres combined to make yardage just inside the Casuals 22 where the referee awarded Mellish a scrum. The resulting scrum was won & Ryan Lewis made a break from the base of the scrum only to be held metres short of the try-line. The rest of the Mellish pack secured the ball with Rich Moorhead being driven over for his first try of the day. Mellish led 10 – 0 at this point.

The 2nd 20 minute session saw Mellish make a total of 14 changes to the side. The side came out & were a little bit flat for 5 mins but began to stamp there authority onto Casuals with some excellent forward drives & probing kicks by Neilson. Casuals withstood the Mellish attacks until the ref awarded a penalty 20 yards out & quick thinking by Neilson, he tapped & ran under the posts for a converted try resulting in a 17 – 0 half-time lead
.

The 3rd 20 minute period saw Mellish show the difference in class between the two sides, the forwards stepped up a gear & started to dominate the exchanges up-front. With good ball won & yardage gained the ball was spun out to the backline more & more with Linney & Myers causing damage with their direct running & off-loads. The period saw Alex Bratley run in a further 3 tries to add to his tally of 4 for the day. Casuals had no answer to his pace & vision.

The final quarter saw Mellish give their youngsters a chance to shine on a match already out of sight for Casuals. They gave a good account of themselves & scored a well worked try under the posts. In particular, Jack Tuckwood made his debut for the senior side & shone throughout his run-out. Casuals did manage to pull one back to give the score a final result of 72 – 7.

Skipper Dave Mason was particular impressed with the run-out giving praise to Ryan Lewis, Paul Linney & Alex Bratley who he thought had very good games. It was a rusty performance to begin with but a lot of plus points came out of the game but still a lot to work on ready for the first league game.
